POLLY

I awoke with a start. The pounding above my room made me anxious at once and I hopped out of bed, quickly surveying the area. The desk chair I’d shoved under the door handle hadn’t been moved, and yet I knew in the end if someone wanted in the chair would be no match.

I’d spent most of the night lying awake and thinking of Leo in a crazy cycle. His family knew my parents’ killer. He left me a safe number. He knows I’m Margaret Hyde. Undercover. I would finish my thoughts of Leo naked, his tan, muscular body wrapped around my frame, teasing me with his fingers and his lips. Finally I would cry and start the entire circle of thought again.

I washed my face, tended to my aching arm and tried to brush the wrinkles out of my clothes with my hands. It was no use. I was just going to be a rumpled mess today. I brushed my hair and pulled it back into a ponytail. I pinched my cheeks and tried to look alive. I needed to walk into the bank looking presentable and take out a substantial amount of cash. If they thought something was up authorities would be called. That was the last thing I wanted right now.

I packed my prepaid phone after adding Leo’s safe number, my wallet and the last change of underwear I had in my backpack. The last thing I had sitting out was the note from Leo. If he was undercover, if he really cared for me, he would find a way to get to me. And when he did it would be on my terms – on my turf. I wasn’t taking the chance of confronting him here in New Orleans where his connections and power were.

I took his note and drew a line through the words and number he’d written and scribbled a few of my own, laying the paper on the nightstand next to the bed.

I opened the door, looked both ways down the hall, and quietly shut the door behind me. I rushed down the stairs and out the building, pulling the collar of my white shirt high around my face.

I was a few blocks from the bank but the fresh air and sunshine felt good. I went over the plan in my head for the millionth time. Money from the bank, and then a cab to the bus station.

It was one minute past nine when I walked through the doors of the bank. I knew the security cameras were on and I purposely gave them a smile as I walked to the teller.

“Good morning,” the young man sang out. “How may I help you?”

“I need to make a withdrawal,” I said with a smile.

“No problem. Do you know your account number?”

“Yes,” I confirmed.

He handed me a slip of paper. “Write your account number here and I’ll take care of the rest.”

I scribbled the account number and handed it back to him, hoping the amount wouldn’t make him twitch.
